I think I've outgrown Karen.....and I have a BIG question

I read Coming Home in one sitting--everyone was out for the day--so, obviously, it held my interest (although I REALLY got annoyed with the dramatic "cliff-hanger" phrases at the end of each chapter). I didn't have the problem that lots of others did with the recaps of the characters, because I'm in my mid-50's now and I don't remember things as well as I used to, and I read the first books of the Baxter series a long time ago. But those books comforted me as I was going through a really bad time in my life, and this one did nothing for me. They just aren't REAL anymore! The first Baxters books had real people in them with flaws. Now, everyone has money, and every book is the portrayal of perfect women with perfect husbands who are so tuned in to their every emotion and want to TALK about things all the time (can most of you ladies relate to THAT?). They have wonderful children who always do cute things and always ask if they can help with something--no dawdling or whining about being MADE to help.....it's all completely unrealistic and makes me feel like my family is far below the norm. People keep hearing God speaking to them in every crisis moment and there is always some immediate redeeming value in the terrible thing that has just happened. That isn't the way life always works! I got stuck in an awful situation about ten years ago. I prayed about it literally thousands of times and fasted. The thing I wanted from God didn't happen, I got no comforting messages about it, and when I look at the situation now, I STILL can't see why God let it end the way it did. It's taken a big toll on my faith and my husband's. These books with their hunky-dory endings don't speak to my pain at all.

Now to the BIG question--it hit me during the "letter reading scene". Elizabeth and John Baxter had Dayne when they were in their late teens (I am assuming, since her parents sent her away, that they still had control over her). If John is now 70, that means Dayne has to be, what, 52, in this book? And he has small children, and they are expecting another at the end? How old is Katy? All of the other Baxter kids have to be in their 40's but they are still portrayed as being youthful and energetic and passionate. Am I wrong in my calculations, or is this another dose of Kingsbury unreality?

I used to LOVE Karen's books, but now they're just fluff and fantasy with a little Bible quote thrown in here and there. I seem to be in a very small minority (although I might not be able to trust all those 5 star reviews as being genuine), but I know some people agree with me. Maybe I've just gotten sour, but the quality and depth I used to love isn't there anymore.

Done with Karen Kingsbury

This book was terrible! I have read and thoroughly enjoyed all of Karen Kingsbury's books. I even tolerated the Bailey Flanigan series. Even when "Loving" was simply a retelling of the annoying Dayne/Katy love story with all of its ridiculous Hollywood angst, I remained a fan. But THIS? 10 chapters of retelling THE SAME BOOKS we have already read? THEN we have to deal with the letter-reading scene in the end where they rehash it all AGAIN? Don't keep repackaging the same story and calling it a new book. That's dishonest.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

And while the Baxters have always been a bit unrealistic... this book went too far. FIVE family members died simultaneously and a week later everybody was at a birthday party? Nobody got angry or fell apart or questioned God? They all just immediately accepted God's will and a year later were fine? Give me a break. REAL grief is ugly and messy and does not resolve itself so quickly. This could have been a good opportunity to deal with the issues and pain of tragedy (she did a good job when Ashley's baby died) and how faith can survive even the worst agony. But being fake and putting a happy face on suffering just cheapens real faith and perpetuates the myth that "real Christians" are always joyful.

With a Heavy Heart ***Spoiler***

It is with a heavy heart that I write this review. This will be the final time I read a Karen Kingsbury book. While Coming Home was better than Loving, it still is not even comparable to Karen's earlier works such as A Time to Dance, A Time to Embrace, Even Now, Waiting for Morning, etc. Somewhere along the line, Karen's writing just slipped. The first half of Coming Home was simply a rehash of the original first 5 Baxter books. It made sense to kill off Erin because the Baxter books hardly ever talked about Erin and her family. I had no connection with Erin, so I was not emotional about her and her family members' deaths. It almost seems like Karen's books are just being completed too fast. I noticed that her next book is with a different publisher, and I have to wonder whether or not this new publisher is requiring even more books per year from Karen. I also noticed how her next book is not being released in paperback, just in hardback and ebook format. Perhaps that is a way to make a few more dollars from Karen's "reader friends." Personally, I don't believe that any of Karen's future books will even be hardback worthy because the quality of her writing has went downhill. I will not be purchasing anymore of her books, as I have already wasted too much of my hard earned money on her books.

Her books were much better without the commercials and without the Hollywood drama and soap opera. There are so many Christian authors who are much better than Karen Kingsbury, and I will become readers of those writers.

Perhaps I am the fool though because Karen has made millions off of people such as myself because she started off as a really great writer. She truly wrote "Life Changing Fiction," and I eagerly awaited her books. I know now though that her earlier material will probably end up being her best work because she was not writing 3 and 4 books a year.

For me, my season of being a fan of Karen Kingsbury is over. Karen will not make another dime off of me. I will spend my hard earned money on Christian writers who are truly writing "Life Changing Fiction"

Archetypal splitting

This is an amazing collection of letters which depict the relationship of two of the greatest psychologists of all time. Naturally, there are people who interpret this relationship in different ways, especially as a very specific situation, peculiar to the development of psychology or otherwise. I think otherwise. Life is rarely linear--it's usually Normally Distributed. Things tend to go in cycles, not straight lines. The relationship between Freud the mentor & Jung the mentee is just not that unusual. In fact, it parallels that of every child (especially males stereotypically seeking independence). There comes a time to leave the nest & for the mentee to strike out on his own--just as there is a time for a new paradigm (per Thomas Kuhn's classic, "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions"). This is precisely what occurred between Freud & Jung. It's almost archetypal. There's even something of a parallel between Jung & Father Victor White in Jung's "Letters." This book has some interesting quotes from each of the two psychologists:

By Freud:

p. 119 Take my urgent advice, arm yourself with ill temper against all unreasonable demands.

p. 121 One must try to learn something from every experience.

p. 169 I have long known that one can't change people. Everyone has something worthwhile in him. We must content ourselves with getting it out of him.

By Jung:

p. 84 What people don't know surpasses the imagination, and what they don't want to know is simply unbelievable.

p. 157 one likes human beings around one and not complex-masks.

LETTERS BETWEEN THE TWO FIGURES OVER THEIR ENTIRE HISTORY

C.G. Jung was once thought of as Freud's chief disciple. These letters cover the period of 1906 (when Jung sent Freud his Studies in Word Association) until their final "break" in 1914. (There is one additional letter from Jung to Freud from 1923, when Jung was referring a patient to Freud for treatment.)

Here are some representative excerpts:

SF: "The leading lights' of psychiatry really don't amount to much; the future belongs to us and our views, and the younger men---everywhere most likely---side actively with us." (1907)
SF: "I regard (for the present) the role of sexual complexes in hysteria merely as a theoretical necessity and do not infer it from their frequency and intensity. Proof, I believe, is not yet possible." (1907)
CG: "(L)ike Herakles of old, you are a human hero and demi-god, wherefore your dicta unfortunately carry with them a semipiternal value. All the weaker ones who come after you must of necessity adopt your nomenclature, originally intended to fit a specific case." (1909)
SF: "It has occurred to me that the ultimate basis of man's need for religion is infantile helplessness, which is so much greater in man than in animals. After infancy he cannot conceive of a world without parents and makes for himself a just God and a kindly nature, the two worst anthropomorphic falsifications he could have imagined." (1910)
SF: "You mustn't suppose that I ever 'lost patience' with you; I don't believe these words can apply to our relationship in any way. In all the difficulties that confront us in our work we must stand firmly together, and now and then you must listen to me, your older friend, even when you are disinclined to." (1910)

About the Author
D. Jeff Burton (BS, MS, PE) has degrees in mechanical engineering and occupational health. Since 1974 he has participated in hundreds of ventilation design and evaluation projects.

Author of many articles and texts on the subject, Burton is also a member of ASHRAE, ASSE, SSA, ACGIH, and is a Past President of AIHA. He has served on the ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Committee and the ANSI Z9.5 Subcommittee on Lab Ventilation. He was an adjunct Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah for over two decades.

There is some duplication with the lab ventilation guidebook but it works well with the Useful Equations book. I like it and find it very useful.

Worth the Money!!!

I bought this book on Seth's website the instant I saw he had an endorsement from Dan Kennedy.

When I started reading, it wasn't hard to see why.

The book is backed by a 500% money back guarantee, and based on what I just read, I doubt Seth
will be giving anyone $50 because they didn't like this book.

Like a lot of other entrepreneurs, I get sick of seeing people write books about markeitng theories.
I set tired of BS that sounds good but doesn't product results in real life. A lot of it isn't even
useful.

This book is packed with so much useful information and strategies, it could keep you busy for the next
10 years. In my opinion its worth more than any of the $2,000 marketing seminars I've attended.

I can't say anything bad about this book, except maybe that I found quite a few typos since it was
the first edition. I'm sure Seth is fixing that, but when it comes to solid content, this book is
in a class of its own.

Pay the $10, you won't be sorry.

I don't personally know Seth, but from the get-go I knew that Seth can produce, so I bought it without reading the book description.

I can tell you now that the description does not do the book justice.

There's just SO much in there.

If you're like me, you're either new to the world of business or looking at ways of marketing yourself more effectively... this book not only gives you the systems and strategies to do so, but changes your business mentality to one of a WINNER.

Heck... I think ANYONE could benefit from reading this book. Yes, that does include you, Mr Gates.

Being honest, I couldn't give you a 'favourite part.'

I learned something from every section, and the book engaged me SO much that I ended up writing a bunch of stuff down! I now have a load of notes which I can reference whenever I'm working with a client or looking to benefit my own business (I work as a Direct Response Copywriter.)

However, the most important lesson to take from the book is that is is down to YOU. Seth gives you the tools to create the Rolls Royce of a marketing machine, but you need to put it into action.

My take home message... if you want more customers and more $$$ then you need to read this book NOW. How long before you're put out of business by marketing-savvy competitor? You owe it to yourself, your business and your family to read this now.

Not helpful for students who do not easily and quickly grasp physics.

This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever used. The example problems are very confusing. They do not reference material from earlier chapters so it's easy to get lost in the reasoning behind solving the problem. The actual chapters themselves do very little to explain physics to someone who doesn't easily grasp it. The end of chapter problems also expect you to be gifted in theoretical physics rather than providing building blocks and stepping stones to truly comprehending the material.

Physics textbook with generally clear explanations and relevant real-world applications- much better than Giancoli's text

As a post-bac student at a local public university, I found this text very helpful in understanding the principles and developing my problem-solving techniques in the second-semester of the algebra-based physics sequence. We had reading quizzes, so I read every chapter that corresponded to the course (chapters 16-30) and thus have much familiarity with the textbook. Walker generally presented clear, in-depth explanations for non-physics majors and provided a variety of worked example problems throughout each chapter. Some reviewers complained that he does not provide enough worked-examples, but you can't expect the author to show how to do every single type of physics problem encountered- the book would be too cumbersome and would defeat the problem-solving nature of physics.

What I appreciated most, however, were the multitude of real-world applications interwoven throughout each chapter. The author eloquently connected the concepts presented to a diverse array of real-world objects and phenomena, such as bimetallic strips (heat), countercurrent exchange in the body (conduction), diesel engines (thermodynamics), printers (electrostatics), keyboards (capacitance), credit card readers (magnetic flux), rainbows (light), CD players (interference), just to name a few. This motivated me tremendously to learn the material, as I realized that all of it relates to our everyday life.

I also found the chapter summaries and conceptual questions at the end of each chapter valuable for testing my understanding. Our class required Mastering Physics, which is an online platform that assigned the same problems as those at the end of each chapter. Walker provided a large variety of problems of easy, medium, and hard difficulty (indicated by the number of dots next to each problem), and doing a large variety of problems was absolutely crucial with developing my confidence in the material. Some of the problems were quite fun, as they related the physics principle to an everyday application. There were some mediocre problems in each chapter, but in my opinion, these were few and far between.

The only issue I had with this text was that some of the sections were not clearly written and thus presented formulas and examples in a confusing way, such as chapter 28 regarding interference. Overall though, I found this text much superior to Giancoli's algebra-based text that I used in AP Physics B in high school; Walker's text gave more concise explanations, more worked-out examples, more diagrams/figures to illustrate the concepts, better homework problems, and more real-world applications. It also appears to be better than Cutnell and Johnson's text too. I highly recommend this text for an introductory physics course and for developing an appreciation of physics that is constantly at work in our daily lives.

The best Physics text I've ever had.

I'm a Physics major, and, although this is an algebra-based book, I still learned the most from this. It is the first Physics book I reach for when something needs clarification or I need to look up a formula. Walker's illustrations and explanations are clear and concise (with a few exceptions), and he covers almost every topic in Physics.
