Time for book 2. If Disney wants Star Wars caliber movies, as was the case with episodes 4+5, then start with an author up to the challenge and let him play, sorry George Lucas, but Zahn's writing exceeds your imagination on every level.

THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY DISCUSSED LIFE AFTER DEATH

Annie Besant (1847-1933) was once a prominent English atheist orator and writer associated with Charles Bradlaugh in the National Secular Society (see her My Path to Atheism), women's rights activist, early advocate of birth control, and supporter of "Home Rule" in India. In 1890 she met Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, and became a prominent leader of the Theosophical Society. Along with Charles Leadbeater, she was a strong advocate of Jiddu Krishnamurti as the coming "World Teacher"---a role which Krishnamurti repudiated in 1929. She wrote many books, such as Esoteric Christianity, Or The Lesser Mysteries, The Ancient Wisdom, Annie Besant An Autobiography, etc. [NOTE: this review pertains to the 100-page paperback edition.]

She wrote in the Preface to this 1893 book, "this little book... is the third in a series of Manuals designed to meet public demand for a simple exposition of Theosophical teachings. Some have complained that our literature is at once too abstruse, too technical, and too expensive for the ordinary reader, and it is our hope that the present series may succeed in supplying what is a very real want. Theosophy is not only for the learned; it is for all... these Manuals are not written for the eager student, whom no initial difficulties can daunt; they are written for the busy men and women of the work-a-day world, and seek to make plain some of the great truths that render life easier to bear and death easier to face."

She observes, "it is necessary... to state the constitution of man, as viewed by the Esoteric Philosophy... Man then consists of The Immortal Triad: the Individual [Will, Intuition, Intellect] ... The Perishable Quaternary: the Person [Mind, Desire, Energizing Vitality, Automatic Vitality]." (Pg. 9)

She suggests, "I believe that very much of the antagonism between the adherents of the Esoteric Philosophy and those of Spiritualism has arisen from confusion of terms, and consequent misunderstanding of each other's meaning... A clear definition of terms, and a rigid adherence to them when once adopted, will at least enable us to understand each other, and that is the first step to any fruitful comparision of experiences." (Pg. 13)

She says, "The etheric double is the ethereal counterpart of the gross body of man. It is the double that is sometimes seen during life in the neighbourhood of the body, and its absence from the body is generally marked by the heaviness or semi-lethargy of the latter... its withdrawal from the body is naturally marked by the lowering of all vital functions, even while the cord which unites the two is still unbroken... the snapping of the cord means the death of the body." (Pg. 22)

She asserts, "the Esoteric Philosophy teaches that death cannot touch the higher consciousness of man, and that it can only separate those who love each other so far as their lower vehicles are concerned... When we take the wider sweep of thought demanded by the Esoteric Philosophy, a far more fascinating prospect of persistent love and union between individual Egos rolls itself out before our eyes than was offered to us by the more limited creed of exoteric Christendom... between the Souls there is no separation, though during incarnation they may not realize the fact in its fulness and beauty." (Pg. 74-75)

This book is an interesting introduction to the Theosophical/Esoteric/Occult view of life after death, and related issues.

About the Author

Dr. Tonny J. Oyana received his Ph.D and his postdoctoral training from the University of Buffalo, New York, USA. He is currently the director of spatial analytics and informatics, Research Center for Health Disparities, Equity, and the Exposome; and a professor of spatial information systems in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Knoxville, USA. His research focuses on establishing the relationship between environmental health and exposure; advancing GIS methods, algorithm design, and spatial analytical methods; and understanding the factors that contribute toward land systems change. In addition, he has authored more than 80 scientific works.

Dr. Florence M. Margai (now deceased) was a professor in the Department of Geography at Binghamton University, New York, USA, where she taught courses that reflected her areas of specialization: advanced statistics, environmental health hazards, health disparities, and environmental analysis using geospatial and visualization technologies. She also served as the associate dean of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, Vestal, New York, USA. Margai obtained her Ph.D from Kent State University, Ohio, USA, and worked with nonprofit organizations to assist in the geographic targeting of vulnerable population groups for disease intervention and health promotional campaigns, sustainability, and capacity development initiatives.

This book gives a useful foundation in GIS with examples. If you're a beginner and you're wanting to start with the basics, this is the book to go with. It will give you a foundation in GIS AND statistics. The only downside is that it does not come with a GIS program key (in other words, you cannot get a temporary ArcGIS license or anything like that).

Henkes's vision of friendship captures the essence of the childlike; his mice live in a sunny, imaginative world mixed with secure routines and the safety of known factors. The story unwinds at a deliberate pace; every sentence is either downright funny or dense with playful, deadpan humor. The artist/author, as always, gently grants room for differences between people (the turnaround in A Weekend with Wendell , for example, and the reconciliation between Wedge and his stepfather in Two Under Par ). Lilly has her own way of doing things, and Chester and Wilson don't know quite what to make of her until the day she uses one of her disguises to frighten off some misbehaving older boys. Chester and Wilson look at Lilly in a new light, and discover that the three of them have more in common than they previously believed, and that perhaps different ways of doing things are just fine. Narrator Laura Hamilton keeps listeners engaged with her terrific intonation and distinct voice for each character. Background music and sound effects enhance the tale. This is where we meet Lilly!!

Chester likes things his way, and he and his friend Wilson get along because they like things the same way. And then wonderful Lilly moves into the neighborhood and shakes everything up! The boys don't like her different ways at first and avoid her as best as possible, but when Lilly rescues them from some bullies, they realize that Lilly is worth the chaos she brings to their previously very ordered lives, and she's really more fun than chaos.

Belly Laughin Four year old!!!

My four year old loves this book, when Lilly does her stuff my son loses it, he actually gets belly laughs. We read his book five nights in a row when we first got it, and we didn't mind reading it over and over. Lilly really is a crack up. The moral is great. I have since bought "Julius Baby of the World" and we have read this the past three nights in a row, and we look forward to reading more by Kevin Henkes.

It works. Pure and simple.

It's hard to review this type of book, so I'd like to tell what happened when I used this book.

I applied online for my dream job. Thanks to my resume I was selected to be interviewed by phone. But thanks to this book I was then selected to be flown me over for an series of in-person interviews.

It was because of this book that I nailed the interviews and was offered the job on the spot after my last interview, something extremely uncommon in my industry.

This book is such a quick an easy read. In fact, she gives away the technique at the beginning of the book. The rest of the book explains how to tweak the technique. Sure, like someone else said, some of the prepared answers to typical interview questions are too cheesy or not realistic, but at least they give you something to use as the foundation for YOUR answers for those questions.

I then used some of her salary negotiation techniques to sucesfully increase the salary amount that they originally offered.

I am now living where I've wanted to live for years, doing a job I enjoy and making over $12k more than at my previous job. This book should cost at least 10 times as much.

One of the best books I had to buy in college and I still use it years later

I had to buy so many books in college and this one is hands down the best one I ever bought and read. It has very applicable information for a range of interviews. I like that is focuses in on certain advice like having a 60-second monologue to answer the typical "tell us a little bit about yourself" introduction to many interviews. I also like how they go through a few examples for a range of fields like marketing, accounting, engineering fields. I have bought this book for friends since I think it is such a valuable tool for prepping for interviews!

This book had some really great, practical advice that came in very useful during my job search. The analysis of what the interviewer is looking for with some of the "tough" questions, and the best ways to answer them was a particularly helpful section. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a job.

Putting Sutherland on Trial

Sutherland argues that legal distinction between causal responsibility for evil and moral blameworthiness for evil is at the heart of a Hegelian theodicy in the Book of Job, where God's authorship of evil may be excusable on the grounds that it is necessary for the production of a higher good. I found this approach new and innovative. It is significant improvement on the traditional Augustian theodicy which draws heavily on the Book of Genesis and blames man for all the natural and moral evils in the world. The connection between human sin and natural evils just isn't there. It is a significant improvement on the tradional Irenean theodicy which draws heavily on the Epistles of Paul and views everyting as a means to character development. Job is just not in need of character development. And the evils he suffers are just too excessive for any normal character improvement.
I think his background as a Canadian criminal defense lawyer really helps his presentation of the legal arguments in the Book of Job.
I think his background as a Senior Fellow at the Mortimer J. Adler Centre for the Study of the Great Ideas really helps his presentation of the moral arguments in the Book of Job.

The court metaphor is indeed central to The Book of Job. God as the source of evil will shock some. I like the direction of this argument. His forceful focus on the Oath of Innocence is great. Yet Job is declared innocent implying, as he says, that God is the cause of this suffering."

His work in ancient Near Eastern sources is apt, and his attention to other studies on Job, by biblical scholars and others, is exemplary. Regardless of whether one is in agreement with its various details or overall thrust, one will want to take seriously into account the perspective and analysis he provides."

Excellent study on Job

This really is a groundbreaking book. Robert Sutherland, a lawyer, explains his theory that the Old Testament Biblical book of Job is about Job taking God to court for not keeping his promises (i.e. God promises to bless righteous people.) For very many reasons I believe this theory makes sense.
The book of Job really is significant because it deals with one of modern atheism's great historical objections to faith in God - that the innocent suffer in a world that a good God has created.
In my opinion this book explains clearly what the book of Job meant in the cultural context in which it was written. Sutherland uses these insights to clarify what it might mean to us today as well.
One of the best books on Job I have ever read.

OUTSTANDING!

This is a beautifully argued book and has provided this Presbyterian preacher with a foothold into a better understanding of the book of Job. This is a great resource and I recommend it highly--as I congratulate the author on a very clear, easy to read, believable argument/ thesis on the central issue of the book of Job. I have decided to preach a sermon series on Job following Easter this year and needed a good introduction and overview of the issues involved. There are loads of resources. Out of all the books that I am currently working through on Job, I have found this is be the most helpful. Sutherland has done an outstanding job (no pun intended!). [Well, maybe].
