Review

"Through his critically nuanced analysis, Jalata offers an invaluable perspective on the historicity and political economy of the major forms of terrorism that have plagued the world over the past five centuries. This is the temporal context within which the ebbs and flows of global capitalism have set the stage for clashing acts of terrorism from above and below. Jalata's compelling and well-researched book offers an insightful framework for comprehending the strategic political deployments of terrorism today and in the past. After reading this book, it should be very difficult to accept the ideologically-fraught way that the concept of terrorism is invoked and the war against it mobilized in dominant political arenas that have been configured to perpetuate disparities that sustain an unjust and inhumane status quo in national and global contexts." - Faye V. Harrison, Professor of African American Studies & Anthropology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, and author of Outsider Within: Reworking Anthropology in the Global Age (2008)

"Jalata makes an important contribution to understanding terrorism in its many historical, geographical, and political guises. He underscores how state-sponsored terrorism is not solely a product of a terrorizing state, but also is linked to its history and changing context of the world-system. Jalata argues persuasively that terrorism from above and below can be understood only fully from such historical and global contexts. This book demonstrates the power of this approach to developing ways to reduce terrorism." - Tom D. Hall, Professor of Emeritus, DePauw University, USA, and co-author of Indigenous Peoples and Globalization: Resistance and Revitalization (2009)

"'Terrorism' is a term often used but little understood. By taking the long view, Jalata offers extremely valuable insights and careful analysis of the meaning of the term. This book should be read by all interested in the topic." - Martin J. Murray, Professor of Urban Planning, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and Adjunct Professor, Department of Afro-american and African Studies, University of Michigan, USA

Review

“As the United States and other Western nations face increasing threats from terrorism at home and in the world, they must come to a better understanding of its origins. Jalata’s Phases of Terrorism in the Age of Globalization offers a complex definition of terrorism through a global historical analysis of the spread of colonialism and capitalism involving the West and the Rest.  Rejecting a narrow western construction of terrorism as a threat from below, Jalata focuses on acts of terrorism, and policies supporting them, committed by state actors from above as well as resistance from below.
By looking at the longue durée, or the long term of history for 500 years, Jalata examines terrorism from above in the colonial Americas, Australia, and Africa and the resulting cultural and economic losses of indigenous peoples, as well as subsequent ideological and political battles in Israel and the Middle East. These analyses not only lay the groundwork for critiquing the growth of Al-Qaeda and the spread of multi-national terrorism in the 21st century, but also make a case for fundamental humanitarian policy changes to promote peace and empowerment.” (Wanda Rushing, Professor Emerita, Department of Sociology, University of Memphis, President of Sociologists for Women in Society, 2016, and author of “The Paradox of Place: Globalization in the American South”(2009))

moderate in control application, good for practical application
By Abdul Rashid Husain
The book does cover some detail aspect of magnetic modeling, but some details are not covered such as the rotational transformation between stator to rotor coordination. The model built is suitable for low-order controller design and could be improved if higher order with state space representation is included for more design of non-linear controller algorithm.

However, the practical aspect of the materials is good such as the electronics, controller and application examples.

Great Book!
By Brianne M Grasmick
I recently used this book to pass my CAPM exam. It was the only book/tool I used. The book comes with a CD which includes great resources. I wish I would have explored the disk earlier in my studying. As a side note, I wish I would have studied the processes and their inputs and outputs more. Even though I passed, I would have felt more comfortable during my exam.

Great study guide....
By Robert Coleman
We reviewed this book as part of a class assignment in Project Management. What we found is that for the money this book is a great resource to help people prepare for and pass either the CAPM or PMP exams offered by the Project Management Institute. This book directly mirrors in content the standard reference book for Project Management; the Project Management Body of Knowledge, PMBOK.

What has set this book apart though in preparation for the CAPM or PMP exams are the additional resources given. The CAPM / PMP All in One Study Guide gives you end of chapter reviews, practice test questions, definitions to key terms, helpful exam tips, an entire chapter left out of the PMBOK related to ethics, and a CD which contains great videos, and practice exams. There is even an added appendix in the back that gives you key things you MUST know in order to pass the exams.

Overwhelmingly, while this book does not replace the PMBOK in the field of project management, anyone who is going to attempt to take either the CAMP or the PMP exam should definitely get a copy of this book and use it to study by.

Good like and kind regards,
Class of BBM 412 F2H02 Wilmington University

Passed the CAPM on my first try!
By Mohamad Bekdache
I ordered this book online all the way from Lebanon. I studied for my certification over a duration of 3 weeks, allocating about 3 hours a day. All I used was this awesome guide that I would recommend anyone to buy. (did not even get the PMBOK)
My studying technique:
- Read each and every single word of this book while jotting down your own summary notes as they will be your number 1 source for reviewing (don't miss the end-of-chapter summaries as some have more info not included in the chapters themselves)
- Take the mock-exam provided for as many times as you till you score >90 to a 100. Also end-of-chapter quizzes are essential.
- Take all kinds of mock exams you can find online. Some are very useful (Brainbok for example) and write down notes for questions you've missed.
- Read the ITTO summary sheet provided in the CD everyday. I did not particularly memorise it, I just understood what each process is and all the terms in the ITTO, so I got a logic out of it.
- Just be motivated to pass the exam as the feeling upon directly receiving the result is tremendous!!!!

Thank you Joseph Phillips!

Review
"This is a quite exceptionally sound and illuminating piece of scholarship. It takes a single revealing and well-documented piece of litmus paper, the figure of Caliban in The Tempest , and tracks it through history and geography, literary criticism, theater, book illustration and painting to give a comprehensive and detailed account of the huge changes in the ways it has been seen and interpreted. In doing so, it provides not only a piece of cultural history but a test for some of the most basic shifts in ways of thinking about mankind through the last three centuries. Its history covers not just English and American thought but Spanish American, Caribbean, and African. It is an interdisciplinary study of the best and most rewarding kind. It is a beautifully worked out and immaculate thesis, and an admirably readable book." Andrew Gurr, University of Reading.

"Shakespeare's Caliban is a major contribution to Shakespearean criticism, and more widely, to cultural history. This kind of wide-ranging and interdisciplinary study ought to become a feature of writing in the humanities in the next decade." Peter Hulme, University of Essex

"This [is an] interesting and remarkably thorough study." Choice

"The Vaughans' analyses are exemplary, but what really distinguishes this book is the amount of sheer pleasure that is to be gotten from reading its elegant prose and scrupulous insights." English Language Notes

"Shakespeare's Caliban deserves a rousing welcome." Essays in Theatre

"Alden T. Vaughan and Virginia Mason Vaughan take us through the historic phases of the Rorschach that is Caliban....[A] marvellously eclectic record of stage history...." Ralph Berry, Dalhousie Review

From the Back Cover
Shakespeare's Caliban examines The Tempest's "savage and deformed slave" as a fascinating but ambiguous literary creation with a remarkably diverse history in criticism and on stage, in art, poetry, and film, and, during the twentieth century, in sociopolitical writings, especially by Caribbean and African authors.

Linux with Operating System Concepts, by Richard Fox

A True Textbook for an Introductory Course, System Administration Course, or a Combination Course

Linux with Operating System Concepts merges conceptual operating system (OS) and Unix/Linux topics into one cohesive textbook for undergraduate students. The book can be used for a one- or two-semester course on Linux or Unix. It is complete with review sections, problems, definitions, concepts, and relevant introductory material, such as binary and Boolean logic, OS kernels, and the role of the CPU and memory hierarchy.

Details for Introductory and Advanced Users

The book covers Linux from both the user and system administrator positions. From a user perspective, it emphasizes command line interaction. From a system administrator perspective, the text reinforces shell scripting with examples of administration scripts that support the automation of administrator tasks.

Thorough Coverage of Concepts and Linux Commands

The author incorporates OS concepts not found in most Linux/Unix textbooks, including kernels, file systems, storage devices, virtual memory, and process management. He also introduces computer science topics, such as computer networks and TCP/IP, binary numbers and Boolean logic, encryption, and the GNUs C compiler. In addition, the text discusses disaster recovery planning, booting, and Internet servers.

Review

"The intent of this text is to provide both use and administration details for Linux, as well as more general concepts of operating systems. ...The writing style is almost conversational…The coverage is quite good… and there are many helpful comments that help in dealing with the many Linux variations. This text has the potential to serve a wide variety of audiences…"
―Computing Reviews, June 2015

"I would strongly recommend this book as a primary textbook for a course or tutorial on the use of Linux, or as a companion reference book in an operating systems course. This is also a great book for business computer systems students, IT personnel who need to jump onto the Linux/Unix wagon, or for an engineer or engineering student who wants to learn more about a workstation that hosts his or her computer aided design software."
―Aleksander Malinowski, Bradley University

"This book is a broad and deep look at everything you need to do to dive into Linux. Both experienced users and Linux newbies will have something to learn from this book; it’s worthy of keeping on your shelf as a reference."
―Peter Bartoli, San Diego State University

"This is a good book that covers a comprehensive list of Linux topics for college students. Unlike many Linux books that are written for system administrators or software professionals who develop Linux systems or applications, this book takes a unique approach and discusses the topics at a level that is appropriate for undergraduate students who are learning Linux."
―Xiannong Meng, Bucknell University

A solid book on the Linux operating system!
By gnohc
“LINUX with Operating System Concepts” by Richard Fox
ISBN: 978-1-4822-3589-0

A solid book on the Linux operating system!

In General:
“Linux with Operating System Concepts” by Richard Fox is a very informative book on the Linux operating system, that is well written with significant explanation, describing key usage and system administration issues, and is practically applicable for a broad audience, including: students, instructors, system administrators, computer engineers and hobbyists.

I feel that employees in academic institutions and businesses that use the Linux operating system would benefit from reading this text, since it covers machine setup and goes into depth with regard to details of computer operating system usage. It’s a truly useful book for many different people and will grow in popularity as the Linux operating system gains a wider audience.

I now have a much better appreciation of the Linux operating system than I did before, where I would otherwise read the online manual-styled documents but not get all the information as a whole and how it all fits together. So many times whilst reading the book I found myself saying things like: “Oh, so that’s why sys admin people do that”, or “Oh, now I get the organization of the file system”, or “So that’s how you automate processes with Bash scripts” or “That’s why people use a logical volume manager to organize partitioning”, etc. I highlighted a lot of ideas throughout.

Pros:
There is a substantial amount of material covering the Linux operating system and its use, with underlying computing fundamentals: see the Contents for the broad range of topics that are covered in depth. There are summaries at the end of each chapter highlighting the key concepts including the Linux commands. Shell scripting is thoroughly covered allowing the reader to write shell scripts to automate processes. A thorough explanation of Linux installation is provided allowing the user to intelligently set up one’s own machine in a flexible manner including a thorough discussion on partitioning. There are a substantial amount of references provided at the back of the book. There are questions that may be used to test one’s knowledge or by instructors for testing purposes if necessary, but the real benefit comes from hands-on usage: the real-world test. The book has satisfied my goal of becoming more independent when sitting in front of a computer with a different operating system, without continually having to rely on system admin support. Now the questions that I ask of system admin are more intelligent, and hence they are more willing to help me as they now see that I’m making a sincere effort.

Cons:
The index is quite brief and rather than a complete noun and verb listing, it is more conceptually oriented. For example, “firewall” and “IP Tables” are not in the index under “F” or “I”, but rather are found under “Network” (“N”). Similarly, “crond” isn’t under “C” but rather under “Service” (“S”). “Make” or “Makefile” don’t appear under “M”, but they may be found when referring to “Compilation”. In that regard, the reader needs to think in a more high-level conceptual manner when using the index. As a result of so much information being conveyed, the reader may feel somewhat overwhelmed at times and may find the book verbose or unnecessarily detailed. The section headings are numbered but unfortunately not in bold, so at times I had to flick backwards and forwards to find certain sections as I lost these in the body of the text. It would have been nice for keywords to have been in a bold font style, throughout the book, to make the reading more engaging.

Reading Approach:
The book can be read from start to finish in its entirety, e.g. at 1 chapter per day for 14 days. However, it’s probably better to start with Chapter 8 Installing Linux, so that the computer system is up and running, if the reader has had some exposure to Linux/Unix in the past. Then, when reading the book, the user can experiment with the material and learn by doing which would be more engaging than simply reading, and would also help in remembering commands. I never felt left behind when reading this book, but I have been exposed to Unix in the past. However, prior exposure isn’t necessary, since everything is covered in so much detail.

Notes:
As a reviewer I have read the whole book with the exception of Section 5.2.2 “emacs” and Section 6.6 “awk”, as these are not of interest to me in my current work. I think it may also be beneficial to read the book twice to let concepts sink in, or use it as a reference manual when working with Linux to complement manual pages or Internet-based material (noting the conceptual nature of the Index). The only other book I’ve read on Unix is “Unix in Plain English” by Reichard and Foster-Johnson. The two books can’t be compared as one deals with operating system commands only, and the other operating system concepts with a discussion on commands where relevant: both appear very useful together. However, to really know whether this book is for you, it’s best to thoroughly read the Contents section to see if it can solve your problems. CentOS is covered more deeply than Ubuntu, but this should not pose a problem for the user. I am tempted to provide examples here of the clarity of technical explanation, but these may not be relevant to your situation, but rest assured, they do exist.

Rating:
I give the book a 5-star rating for the following reasons: practical, relevant, caters for a broad audience, scientific, thorough, informative detail, and readable within a reasonable amount of time. The amount of time this book has saved me makes the price good value. The author has been very generous in sharing his obviously substantial body of knowledge here, so I kind of feel grateful for that.

Summary:
“Linux with Operating System Concepts” is a thorough, useful and practical book allowing the reader to have a better understanding of the Linux operating system with helpful information and examples on command usage, scripting, partitioning, installation and setup, that all applies to the real world.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

The Free Negro in North Carolina, 1790-1860, by John Hope Franklin

John Hope Franklin has devoted his professional life to the study of African Americans. Originally published in 1943 by UNC Press, The Free Negro in North Carolina, 1790-1860 was his first book on the subject. As Franklin shows, freed slaves in the antebellum South did not enjoy the full rights of citizenship. Even in North Carolina, reputedly more liberal than most southern states, discriminatory laws became so harsh that many voluntarily returned to slavery.

A well-balanced and objective study of a subject that is often distorted with prejudice.--Political Science Quarterly

From the Back Cover
John Hope Franklin has devoted his professional life to the study of the American South and African Americans. Originally published in 1943 by UNC Press, The Free Negro in North Carolina, 1790-1860 was his first book on the subject. As Franklin shows, freed blacks in the antebellum South did not enjoy the full rights of citizenship. Even in North Carolina, reputedly more liberal than most southern states, discriminatory laws became so harsh that some voluntarily returned to slavery. When Franklin wrote The Free Negro in North Carolina, the subject of free blacks had received scant attention from scholars. Since then, however, the topic has generated a great deal of interest. In a new foreword to this edition, Franklin surveys the scholarship on free blacks that has appeared since the original publication of his study, and he reaffirms the importance of understanding the variations and complexities of the African American experience.

It is a great read, well researched and written

It is a great read, well researched and written. However I was looking for genealogical information, of which there is very little and none of value to me. However that does not take away for the value of the book. John L. Whitney

I Highly Recommend John Hope Franklin's "The Free Negro in Noth Carolina"
By William D Howard
i am about to write a biography of my paternal ancestors who come from North Carolina. My apical NC ancestor lived from about 1799 to 1857 (the period covered by this book), and he was a free person of color (who owned his own business), but he was born a slave. I can hardly begin to tell you how much I learned about him and his descendants as a result of reading this well researched and documented book. It is written clearly, and I could hardly bear to put it down.

I definitely recommend this book!

EXCERPT

I was lost in the moment. The feeling of his hands on my body, his lips against mine, all that heat we shared. I had missed all of him so much.

But I snapped back to reality when I felt his fingers working the tie on the back of my bikini top, pulling it loose, right there, outside, on the cottage’s sun deck.

I pulled my lips away from his and gasped.

“What are you doing?” I asked. “We can’t… not here.”

I put a hand against my chest, holding my top in place.

Robert smiled a devilish smile. “Why not here?” he shrugged. “I’ve made a pretty good plan.”

“What?” I asked, as he resumed running his hand over my body.

“We’re all alone. I arranged it all. The staff have all gone. The security have been instructed not to approach the grounds. There is no one else in our world right now except for us, my darling wife.”

He pulled at the front of my bikini. I let him go without resistance. He tossed the garment to the side, and took in my heaving breasts, rising with deep breaths.

“See?” he said. “Freedom.”

Standing out there in the sunlight, half-naked, was strange and exciting. I’d never done anything so daring. But I fancied it. I had to admit, I fancied it a lot.

“And the rest of your plan?” I asked, nestling my naked breasts against his chest as he wrapped me in his arms again.

He laughed. “Well,” he said. “We’re going to get you pregnant.”

The Mountain Between Us: A Novel, by Charles Martin

From the author of Where the River Ends, comes this page-turning story of love and survival.

On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport. Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding. Dr. Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to get back East for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day. When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection. And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as urgently. And then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness-- one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Ben, who has broken ribs and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive. Fortunately, Ben is a medical professional and avid climber (and in a lucky break, has his gear from a climb earlier in the week). With little hope for rescue, he must nurse Ashley back to health and figure out how they are going to get off the mountain, where the temperature hovers in the teens. Meanwhile, Ashley soon realizes that the very private Ben has some serious emotional wounds to heal as well. He explains to Ashley that he is separated from his beloved wife, but in a long standing tradition, he faithfully records messages for her on his voice recorder reflecting on their love affair. As Ashley eavesdrops on Ben's tender words to his estranged wife she comes to fear that when it comes to her own love story, she's just settling. And what's more: she begins to realize that the man she is really attracted to, the man she may love, is Ben.

As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous. How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever?

Both a tender and page-turning read, The Mountain Between Us will reaffirm your belief in the power of love to sustain us.

Prelude

 Hey…
I’m not sure what time it is. This thing should record that. I woke a few minutes ago. It’s still dark. I don’t know how long I was out.
The snow is spilling in through the windshield. It’s frozen across my face. Hard to blink. Feels like dried paint on my cheeks. It just doesn’t taste like dried paint.
I’m shivering…and it feels like somebody is sitting on my chest. Can’t catch my breath. Maybe broke two or three ribs. Might have a collapsed lung.
The wind up here is steady, leaning against the tail of the fuselage…or what’s left of it. Something above me, maybe a branch, is slapping the plexi-glass. Sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard. And more cold air is coming in behind me. Where the tail used to be.
I can smell gas. I guess both wings were still pretty full of fuel.
I keep feeling like I want to throw up.

A hand is wrapped around mine. The fingers are cold and calloused. There’s a wedding band, worn thin around the edges. That’s Grover.
He was dead before we hit the treetops. I’ll never understand how he landed this thing without killing me, too.
When we took off, the ground temperature was in the single digits. Not sure what it is now. Feels colder. Our elevation should be around eleven-five. Give or take. We couldn’t have fallen more than five hundred feet when Grover dipped the wing. The control panel sits dark, unlit. Dusted in white. Every few minutes the GPS on the dash will flicker, then go black again.
There was a dog here somewhere. All teeth and muscle. Real short hair. About the size of a loaf of bread. Makes snotty, gurgling sounds when he breathes. Looks like he’s jacked up on speed. Wait…
‘Hey, boy…Wait…no. Not there. Okay, lick but don’t jump. What’s your name? You scared? Yeah…me, too.’
 I can’t remember his name.

I’m back…was I gone long? There’s a dog here. Buried between my coat and armpit.
Did I already tell you about him? I can’t remember his name.
He’s shivering and the wrinkles around his eyes are quivering. Whenever the wind howls, he jumps up and growls at it.

The memory’s foggy. Grover and I were talking, he was flying, maybe banking right, the dash flashed a buffet of blue and green lights, a carpet of black stretched out below us, not a light bulb for sixty miles in any direction, and…there was a woman. Trying to get home to her fianc and a rehearsal dinner. I’ll look.

…I found her. Unconscious. Elevated pulse. Eyes are swollen shut. Pupils are dilated. Probably a concussion. Several lacerations across her face. A few will need stitches. Right shoulder is dislocated and left femur is broken. It didn’t break the skin but, her leg is angling out and suit leg is tight. I need to set it…once I catch my breath.

…It’s getting colder. I guess the storm finally caught us. If I don’t get us wrapped in something…we’ll freeze to death before daylight. I’ll have to set that leg in the morning.

Rachel…I don’t know how much time we have, don’t know if we’ll make it out, if…but…I take it all back. I was wrong. I was angry. I never should’ve said it. You were thinking about us. Not you. I can see that now.
You’re right. Right all along. There’s always a chance.

 Always.

Not Just A Survival Story But Much More Than That!
By BALROOP SINGH
I don’t know why I picked up this book, probably the name allured me and while browsing one of the recommended books of Charles Martin, I stumbled upon this and bought it. Initially I kept telling myself, what a waste of money, as I didn’t like it. I even thought of dropping it but I am glad I didn’t as it did get more gripping after 100 pages.
It is quite hard to focus your story on just two characters and make it readable when you have to face the most challenging situation of an air crash but Martin doesn’t disappoint. I have read an account of a real life airplane crash and the way a lone survivor found her way out of a jungle. So the story seemed quite credible to me but it is repetitive at places and the flashes of Ben’s personal life seem to fade insignificantly in the wake of life threatening situations.

I am glad I pulled through this book as half way through it I changed my opinion, which rarely happens. There came a stage when I couldn’t put it down! I finished 25% of this book in one sitting, eager to know the outcome! It is not just a survival story, not just a romantic novel but much more than that, subtly hinting at the finer nuances of life, which seem less important when we have all the blessings on a platter but don't acknowledge them.

Riveting!
By J. M. Hochstetler
Ever want to turn off life, hunker down, and just READ? Take a couple of strangers, man and woman, stranded when their chartered plane crashes at high altitude in the remotest region of the Rockies. After their pilot had a heart attack. During a blizzard. Both injured. Without food or any hope of being found. Make them believable, sympathetic characters—the woman missing her wedding day and battling doubts; the man, scheduled surgeries…and a beloved wife from whom he’s separated—and you’ve got one riveting read.

He’s a doctor, runner, and mountain-climbing enthusiast, so he has solid survival skills and some equipment. He also has broken ribs, and she has a broken leg. The odds are stacked incredibly high, considering that no one knows where they are. And at least 40 miles of some of the most rugged terrain on the planet stands between them and help. Added to that, the critical revelation about the hero that doesn’t come until near the end is truly gut-wrenching. The author, however, constructs the story in a way that makes the characters and plot totally believable The conclusion is very satisfying, though for me it was a bit longer and more drawn out than it needed to be, which turned it into a bit of an anticlimax. That’s a minor point in an otherwise thrilling story that kept me fully engaged. Kudos to the author!

' ... but the greatest of all is love.'
By John E. Donovan
In this book, author Martin blends a beautifully written love story, into a high-intensity aircraft-disaster story, and the result is a novel that is, both, deeply moving, but also gut-wrenching and highly-suspenseful.
I've read Charles Martin's "Wrapped in Rain," and his "When Crickets Cry," thinking that, surely, his books can't get any better, but I've been proven wrong, as this is another 5-Star read and not to be missed if you enjoy fiction written by a master story writer.
