About the Author
Robin Bade was an undergraduate at the University of Queensland, Australia, where she earned degrees in mathematics and economics. After a spell teaching high school math and physics, she enrolled in the PhD program at the Australian National University, from which she graduated in 1970. She has held faculty appointments at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, at Bond University in Australia, and at the Universities of Manitoba, Toronto, and Western Ontario in Canada. Her research on international capital flows appeared in the "International Economic Review" and the "Economic Record."
Robin first taught the principles of economics course in 1970 and has taught it (alongside intermediate macroeconomics and international trade and finance) most years since then. She developed many of the ideas found in this text while conducting tutorials with her students at the University of Western Ontario.
Michael Parkin studied economics in England and began his university teaching career immediately after graduating with a BA from the University of Leicester. He learned the subject on the job at the University of Essex, England's most exciting new university of the 9160s, and at the age of 30 became one of the youngest full professors. He is a past president of the Canadian Economics Association and has served on the editorial boards of the "American Economic Review "and the "Journal of Monetary Economics. "His research on macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international economics has resulted in more than 160 publications in journals and edited volumes, including the "American Economic Review, "the" Journal of Political Economy, "the" Review of Economic Studies, "the" Journal ofMonetary Economics, "and the" Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking." He is the author of the best-selling Addison-Wesley textbook, Economics.
Robin and Michael are a wife-and-husband duo. Their most notable joint research created the Bade-Parkin Index of central bank independence and spawned a vast amount of research on that topic. They don't claim credit for the independence of the new European Central Bank, but its constitution and the movement toward greater independence of central banks around the world were aided by their pioneering work. They are dedicated to the challenge of explaining economics ever more clearly to an ever-growing body of students.

Thanks to macro economics, I have learned that my college tuition fees increase faster than the inflation rate and that the longer I stay in college the more debt I'll accumulate. 6/5 would buy overpriced books to rarely use for class.

DO NOT GET THE ONLINE BOOK!!!!! If you're thinking the only difference between the hardcover and online versions of this book is the color of the fish, then you're wrong. That's what I had thought until halfway through my semester. I was wondering for a while why the book didn't have anything on GDP or some of the other things taught in class until I saw my friends book, which looked completely different from mine!!!! Either get the online version somewhere else or get it in paper. I wasted a lot of time reading and studying what I thought were the right chapters.

Dean-of Watergate fame and author of the memoirs Blind Ambition and Lost Honor-does his best to make Warren G. Harding's lethargic life and scandal-laced presidency sound interesting. Throughout his entire pre-presidential career-including stints in both the Ohio state senate and the U.S. Senate-Harding was, for the most part, nothing more than an amiable nonentity. No bill of any consequence bore his name nor did he champion any measure worth recalling. Elected the nation's 29th chief executive in 1920 by an overwhelming vote in a postwar reaction against Wilson's foreign policies, Harding was the first president born after the Civil War. He was destined to die in office in 1923, but even before his death, he allowed the infamous Teapot Dome fiasco (based largely on dubious dealings conducted by the most notorious of Harding's many mediocre appointees-the anticonservationist secretary of the interior, Albert B. Fall) to occur. In an attempt to give Harding his due, Dean points out that he did at least bring to an end President Wilson's longstanding practice of excluding blacks from federal appointments. As well, in a speech of rare passion and boldness delivered in Birmingham, Ala., he called for political, economic and educational equity between the races. His most permanent domestic accomplishment, however, was as dull as it was necessary: the creation of the Bureau of the Budget. Dean (and Arthur Schlesinger's American Presidents series) is not to be faulted for the fact that Harding's life is a yawn-but a yawn it is.

Adult/High School–Harding is perhaps the best-known president about whom we actually know very little. His administration is seen as marking a conservative reaction to the progressivism begun by one Roosevelt and setting up the conditions for the progressivism of another. More personally, he appears as the hapless front man for the gang of thieves whose crimes culminated in the Teapot Dome Scandal, the acme of political scandals until Watergate. Dean is from Harding's hometown in Ohio and learned about him from residents who knew him there. Taking full advantage of the president's papers, which generally have been unused by historians, the author set out to discern who Harding was. The man who emerges is far more nuanced and interesting than would be presumed. He comes across as an individual of skill and drive who was caught up in the issues of his day, such as international disarmament and industrial conflict, and at a time far more demanding and dangerous than tends to be conjured up by images of the 1920s. Some of his officials served him well and others behaved badly as Harding sought to carry the country into the future without losing touch with the past. For an eye-opening entry in the American Presidents series, Dean has plumbed the historical record and recent unearthings about Harding to argue that what has long been believed about him isn't so. Well before the scandals that sullied his memory, which broke after his death, he had fired one culprit and had another resign. He drank abstemiously, since more than one highball sickened him. He sired no illegitimate children in the White House closets; no legitimate children, either, because he was (he believed) sterile. He was no womanizer; only a brief affair during his Senate term (1915-21) has been confirmed. His poker games were penny-ante affairs played with close friends. Perhaps the worst news for his legend is that the record shows he was highly intelligent, conscientious, and innovative (the regular presidential press conference, a major disarmament conference, and the Bureau of the Budget were principal achievements, and he fought for antilynching legislation). Looks like he was the most progressive president between the Roosevelts. Ray Olson

Short book that makes some good points

John W. Dean's new short biography of Warren G. Harding, the twenty-ninth president of the United States, is a welcome addition to the scant amount of good literature on the president who enjoyed a great reputation while in office, but sank to the bottom of the list when scandals and corruption in his administration were exposed after his death. For us Harding enthusiasts Dean's book makes the explicit point that Harding wasn't really all that bad...that after all, he had some successes in the abbreviated term he served from 1921-1923. To this end, I believe Dean has made a strong case.
Warren Harding was a man whose entire life seemed to be clouded in intrigue and mystery. It's always been a wonder to me why historians haven't written more about him. From the gossipy "The Shadow of Blooming Grove" (1968) through Dean's book, one senses a definite uptick in Harding's reputation. Dean recites Harding's accomplishments....the Washington disarmament conference (1921-22), the creation of the Bureau of the Budget and his naming of former president William Howard Taft to be the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The author gives Harding praise for his efforts to help settle the coal and railroad strikes and his ability to stand up to Congress when he thought he was right. In Dean's book President Harding comes across more forcefully than in other books I've read about this president.
Dean suggests that one of Harding's biggest political achievements was his ability not to make enemies. Of course, this was his biggest problem, too. Dean is careful not to elevate Harding too high and the overall success of this book is to keep Harding out of the cellar of the ranking of presidents. Perhaps that space can now be occupied by James Buchanan.
John Dean conquers no new real historic ground. The book is very short and more, I think, aimed at readers who don't know too much about Warren Harding. Dean's prose is sometimes a bit wooden and I wish he had included a few more photographs. I particularly enjoyed the section on Harding's selection of the cabinet and the comments about Harding's speaking style and substance by William McAdoo and H.L. Mencken (page 73) are very funny.
Was Warren G. Harding fit for the presidency? Even Harding wondered about that, himself. John Dean has essentially said "yes" and I agree with him. The author has presented a well-researched book and one that deserves to be read.

Great book!

his is the last book in the Cloud Prophet trilogy and I am sad to see it end. I have followed and review every book loved it. From the start of slave girl to blooming into someone she never thought it be, this book had a great ending.

What I like most about this book is the great plot line. It gripped the reader from the very beginning holding the reader down for a ride we never expected. With every turn of the page, the reader is immersed with wars, betrayals, and old enemies coming back for more. Ms. Jensen really did a fantastic job in closing this series. All questions were answered, enemies were fought, and the ending gave hope for a new beginning.

I don't really want to spoil this book, but the way that the book flowed from a very intense start to a ending that is peaceful left the reader satisfied that all right. That all is everything the way it should be. I love that the characters grew up so much before the readers eyes and got to see them in their full potential. There is nothing like satisfaction when the bad guys go down.

Did this book entertain me? Yes it did! It had so much more than I thought here be plus it left me with a wide smile on my face. This is a great trilogy where characters rise from the lowest depths and become more. Ms. Jensen writing style is strong, fun to read, and most importantly easy to get into. She created great characters in a world where thriving was cut off. If you want a series of action, adventure, and going to new places, read this series!

A Great Ending for a Wonderful Series!

To say that I am at a loss for words would be a complete understatement. It honestly amazes me that this series almost got away from me. Now it has come to an end, and although I'm a little bit sad for this fact . . the end was done in such a way that I can't help but to smile.

Severed comes out of the gate running for the finish line. Taking you right back to lands far away. Where knowing who you can trust and who you can't isn't as clear as black and white. Severed is packed with suspense, fighting wars, emotional scenes and even a drama princess.

It's now or never for Reychel. All this fighting has to end and she plans to see it through. Even if it means she gives up her very own life for all those she cares most about. Most definitely a book series to be shared.

I absolutely adored this trilogy. Thought I wouldn't like it since it was a YA book but loved Mark anyways. This was a very creative read and had very good plots, written very well. I'm glad the 1st book was free to download on my ipad kindle app, so that I could get hooked into reading the last 2.

Harriet Lerner, PhD is one of our nation’s most loved and respected relationship experts.  Renowned for her work on the psychology of women and family relationships, she served as a staff psychologist at the Menninger Clinic for several decades. Wow! Where's this book been all my life?!

I read this book in an afternoon. Once I've had a chance to absorb its truths a bit more, I plan to read it again. This book is for everyone and anyone who has ever needed to offer or to accept an apology. Not only does Lerner offer anecdotes the reader can easier identify with, she offers practical tools that make it possible for one to move forward. Chapter 10: "'You Need to Forgive' and Other Lies That Hurt You" on its own was well worth the price of the book. Thank you, Dr. Lerner!

Should be required reading for all people.

Really helpful text in understanding what a real, honest apology entails. This is one of the most difficult issues we humans deal with -- whether our own apologies, or those offered to us. Understanding what constitutes a real apology and learning how to offer an effective apology can truly alter our interpersonal affairs. What to say, and especially, what NOT to say when you want to say you're sorry. Wish everyone had this as required reading.

Excellent book with one glaring error

An excellent book - well written and well expressed. However, there is a glaring omission in that the pain of sexual abuse is not dealt with. As a psychotherapist myself, a large percentage of patients I work with have struggled for years - even decades - with unresolved issues around blame, self-blame, and questions of forgiveness. Dr. Lerner carefully expresses that you don't need to forgive in order to move on with your life, but I would have liked an additional chapter called "When Forgiveness is Impossible: Making Peace with Yourself."

Great Tool for Making a Web Site

I've made a few websites for my family and a couple for my business. The normal "point and click" systems that are on most web sites like Blogger or Wordpress have mostly woked okay, but every once in a while something just comes out wrong and I have no idee why. For example I delete a word and suddenly the type face for the entire pages changes. What? I knew it had something to do with the underlying HTML code, but switching over to looking at the code showed me what looked like gibberish.

Until now. HTML5 by Alex Stone is a short, direct tutorial on HTML code.The book explains the development of HTML code and gives a good run down on HTML codes and what they do, with several examples and illustrations so the technologically challenged can follow along.

It doesn't make me into an expert programmer, but now I have the knowledge and the references so I can open up the underlying code, trace down to where my problems lie. I can now make simple adjustments without destroying the whole page. Since this greatly reduces the possibility I will throw my computer through a window in frustration, i count that as a good thing.

Makes Designing A Website Actually EASY

I'm a very experienced graphic designer and I knew I was always leaving money on the table not knowing how to do web design, primarily with HTML 5 since that's the new language on the block. Code terries me, it really does, but this book really made me comfortable getting to know it a lot better after just flipping through a few pages. When books like these that are technical have a lot of fluff in them, it's almost impossible to get through, but this book was just straight to the point and had detailed explanations of what would be the complex parts to break them down into even smaller steps and make everything incredibly easy to understand. I now feel confident growing my HTML 5 capabilities and whenever I'm working on a site in HTML 5, this book is sitting right beside my laptop on my Kindle for easy reference. Pick this one up if you're a web designer or want to get started with website design :)

HTML5 in a nutshell

I occasionally need to craft web sites by myself. I have heard of HTML5 but was afraid to give it a try, because all those coding knowledge required seems to be too difficult for me.

I was surprised to know that it’s actually quite easy to build a website using HTML5 after reading this book. The author clearly explained how to style pages using CSS (the professional way), add audio and video elements to the web site using HTML5 (without relying on plugins), creating lists and more. I like the writing style of the author, it’s feels like having a tutor holding my hand to try coding a web site. Every details are well covered.

If you are new to HTML5, this is a book that you really should give a try.

About the Author
Zachary Adam "Zack" Whedon is an American screenwriter and comic book writer. He graduated in 2002 with a film degree from Wesleyan University where he served as president of the Eclectic Society. Zack is from a family of writers: he is the son of screenwriter Tom Whedon, grandson of screenwriter John Whedon, and the brother of screenwriter/musician Jed Whedon and producer/director/writer Joss Whedon.
His first professional work in television was as a production assistant on his brother's series Angel. Whedon joined the crew of the HBO western drama Deadwood as an assistant to executive producer David Milch for the first season in 2004. The series was created by Milch and focused on a growing town in the American West. Whedon returned as Milch's assistant for the second season in 2005. He also became a writer for the third and final season in 2006 when he co-wrote the episode Amateur Night with writer's assistant Nick Towne. Whedon and the writing staff were nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for Outstanding Drama Series at the February 2007 ceremony for their work on the third season.
He also wrote and acted in an episode of Milch's next series John from Cincinnati.

Fantastic so far.

I've had this for probably 2 weeks now and have only managed to get through about half of it so far so take this for what it's worth...

Almost right away, I was a bit saddened by reading this. I could tell immediately that it was written with (at least nearly) as much love and connection to these characters as Joss himself. It was also apparent that this story would be perfect for the big screen as a sequel to Serenity. And so it was with mixed feelings that I continued to read since I knew this story and any others would never be seen on the big screen (or small screen for that matter). I've also found myself reading only a couple pages at a time and putting the book down. Not because it's tough to get into but because reading this I can hear the voices of my favorite fictional characters and I'm taken back to that wonderful time when the crew of Serenity still had life.

I'm anxious to get through this and see how the story unfolds but a part of me is hesitant to do so too quickly for fear of losing them once again. So I'm savoring it; making it last as long as I can. Yes, I'm probably nuts but I know there are at least a few of you who knwo exactly what I'm talking about. And for those of you who can understand this rationale and even relate to it but haven't purchased this, please do yourself the favor and do so now. You won't regret it.

Love it!

This was a perfect post-Serenity graphic novel. I couldn't ask for more from this book and am hoping that there will be more to come. I love this universe and am glad that it is kept alive in such a creative way. It tied up story lines that as a fan of Firefly and Serenity I always wanted to see, introduced some surprises, and left me very content overall.

Browncoat, why haven't you bought this yet?

(Spolier free) This is amazing. I am biased. There I said it. Just got home found this in a package and opened it and read it nonstop front to back immediately. Perfect. The story is great, moves at a perfect clip and references and reminds and is wonderful. Some parts are bittersweet; if you are a browncoat you'll know what I mean, other parts are action packed and hilarious. Other parts will fulfill the shipper in all of us. Sorry for being obscure, don't wanna ruin it for you. Its a completely perfect addition to the Firefly/Serenity story. The art work is beautiful and the dialogue makes me feel like the show is still playing. Crossing my fingers for more like this in the future. Nothing can stop the signal.

Trial Bible

There is not really anything anyone can say about Trial Techniques, other than it is the Trial Bible for all up and coming litigators (and even many current litigators). A staple of America's law school classes, Trial Techniques is wonderful guide to not only give order, but an advantageous edge, to one's trial preparatons. Professor Mauet puts forth useful information in an easy to use format. Not only is he a great writer, but a wonderful lecturer on his techniques. If you have any use for attempting to organize a trial, or if you are a student of the law, this book is for you.

excellent book to help an attorney prepare for trial

I bought a previous edition of this book about 25 years ago when I was a fledgling prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office. I still think it's one of the best, one of the most practical aids a trial attorney can have.
