Merry Shannon was born in California in 1979 and grew up a military brat. An avid reader with a deep love of language, Merry began writing at the age of seven and completed her first novel-length story when she was thirteen. She graduated in 2001 with a BA in English and currently resides in Colorado with her two cats. In addition to writing, she works full-time doing county social work, and in her free time enjoys sewing glittery costumes and drooling over the gorgeous women of the Japanese Takarazuka theater.

A truly astounding book, as good as fantasy fiction gets.

This is such a wonderful, special book. It may be the author's first, and fantasy stories may not normally appeal to you, but this was amazing to me. I completely forgot that this was an "alternative" romance book by a new writer!

This is first and foremost a truly exemplary Adventure and Romance novel. As great as any I've read by Eddings, or Zelazny, or Donaldson. And -just- as touching in it's moments of love and heartbreak. (And there are many.)

The plot points of spoiled young princess, court intrigue and treachery, a loving Goddess, a dedicated, dashing yet torn young hero, are all old and familiar, yet the story is refreshing and above all, new, despite this. And in no small part because the story is told from the author's heart. I could really tell this story has been cherished by the writer, for a long long time.

I started backwards, reading her second book first ("Branded Ann"), and what I said then is doubly true with this, her first book. I really got to care about the two main characters, and I was carried away with their lives. Heck, rumors that I may have gotten teary eyed more than a few times in reading it (and re-reading it) would be difficult to deny.

I love books. Yet I can be honest in being critical of books I don't like. I have just started to discover and enjoy the genre of "lesbian romance" books, and perhaps I'm a bit more comfortable than some in reading them with an open mind and heart, but -this- book truly transcends the genre. I wish I was a better writer, so that I could be more eloquent, and somehow convince you how unimportant it is that the -hero- is secretly a -heroin-. (It's important to the plot, yes, but not to the -book- itself.) This story stands head and shoulders above many other popular fantasy books, on it's -own- merits.

I won't deny, there are a number of pages of, er... "physical intimacy", enough to -more- than fill the needs of one's romantic, and baser instincts, yet without offending.

I honestly think you would enjoy getting to know the people inhabiting this world: Talon, with her self-sacrifice and dedication, and the heartache she endures for the sake of the people she loves; Shasta, shedding her mercurial adolescence, and learning to put her kingdom and the ones she loves ahead of herself; Lyris, overcoming her quiet, shy nature to seek out her destiny serving the Goddess, and in doing so finding a strength she didn't know she had, and; Bria, stumbling through being the youngest sister, and the terrible mistakes she makes.

The list of characters goes on, and yet it is not so long as to be confusing. I was delighted to see the author has a website, and to see there that she will return to the kingdom of Ithyria with the book tentatively entitled "Prayer of the Handmaiden". (Wherein I hope to see the return of the irascible chambermaid Erinda, and the woman she lost to the Goddess's service?? Hint? HINT?!) Ok, I'll shut up now.

While the basic premise of the novel, both where a princess falls in love with a protector and a woman living as a man for practical purposes achieves glory accidentally, seem predictable and familiar, the novel itself takes the idea and runs merrily away with it. 'Sword of the Guardian' quickly rolls off into the territory of the best kind of political fantasy, drawing in unique worldbuilding, an original magic system, and a compelling message about chosen families. In addition, the romance is well paced and delightfully believable, full of pining and misunderstandings and passion. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a gay old time!

If you want a romance that draws you in, and isn't cliche. Then I highly recommend this book, you'll fall in love with every turn of the page. And if you can't get enough then you'll definitely get trapped into the unexpected pirate adventure of "Branded Ann" which is also by Merry Shannon!!

More than Potential

Talent is Never Enough.

John C. Maxwell has a wonderful book entitled, Talent is Never Enough. Maxwell outlines thirteen characteristics which must be coupled with intelligence and talent in order to reach long-term success.

Belief. Passion. Initiative. Focus. Preparation. Practice. Perserverance. Courage. Teachability. Character. Relationships. Responsibility. Teamwork.

"You see, people who neglect to make the right choices to release and maximize their talent continually underperform. Their talent allows them to stand out, but their wrong choices make them sit down. Their friends, families, coaches and bosses see their giftedness, but they wonder why they so often come up short of expectations. Their talent gives them oppotunity, but their wrong choices shut the door. Talent is a given, but you must earn success."

Ironically, there is a difference between underperformance and failure. Failure is actually a crucial part of long-term success. Underperformance is not. Maxwell mentions, "there are two kinds of people in this world: those who want to get things done and those who don't want to make mistakes." Believe in your talent. Passionately persue your talents. Initiate your dreams. And then learn from your mistakes.

"One of the paradoxes of life is that the things that initially make you sucessful are rarely the things that keep you successful." Egoism and pride are often the strongest bariers to success. If a person can humble herself to learn from every person in their life, every circumstance of their condition, and every relationship, then one will find the people, the situations and the relationships that will help them build each of the 12 other characteristics of the talented success.

Life Changing book for those who have raw talent

I have just finished one of the greatest books written for people with talent by John Maxwell. "Talent is never enough." I want to encourage all of you to read this book. This has been one of the best reads of my life. Here is a great quote and then a summary of the 13 areas that add to our talent.

I challenge each of you to do this exercise, it will build the team you are a part of. "For the next two weeks, make a commitment to yourself to take no credit for anything that goes right. Praise your employees, co-workers, colleagues, and family members for their contributions. Note the difference it makes in their performance and your relationship with them. I believe that once you've tired it, you will enjoy giving the credit away so much that it will become a regular part of your life."

2. Passion energizes my talent.
3. Initiative activates my talent
4. Focus directs my talent.
5. Preparation positions my talent.
6. Practice sharpens my talent.
7. Perseverance sustains my talent.
8. Courage tests my talent.

11. Relationships influence my talent.
12. Responsibility strengthens my talent.
13. Teamwork multiplies my talent.

As a team, my hope is that we can help each other grow to new heights daily. Adopt one of these and work on them daily. For me, courage and Perseverance have been a weakness of mine, however, after reading this book I feel like these two weaknesses will turn into great strengths.

Great book on how to develop your potential

This book explains that having talent is not enough to be successful. You must work hard to develop your talent in order to become successful. The author outlines 13 factors to maximize a person's talent. They are:

1. Beliefs lifts you talent. When people believe in themselves, they unleash power in themselves that could allow them to reach their potentials.

2. Passion energizes your talent. Passion creates fire, provide fuel and sustain your energy. Passion allows you to carry on no matters how many times you fall down or how other people say that you cannot succeed.

3. Initiative activates your talent. You don't wait for everything to be perfect to move forward. You don't wait for the problem to disappear. You don't wait to gain your confidence or fear to subside. You start by taking the first step and things will get easier when you get momentum.

4. Focus directs your talent. Focus channels your energy to the right place. We should focus on developing our potential. We should focus on the present. We should focus on our strength, not our weaknesses. We should focus on the result to stay grounded. We should focus on the present and not worry about the future.

5. Preparation positions your talent. Preparation precedes opportunity. Preparation for tomorrow begins with the right use of today. Good preparation leads into action. Preparation allows you to position yourself when opportunity arises.

6. Practice sharpens your talent. Consistent practice sharpens your talent. Practice make perfect. Practice requires us to make the extra effort that differentiates us from success with failure. You can never arrive at your talent; you can only continue to strive towards it.

7. Perseverance sustains your talent. Talent provides hope for reaching your potential, but perseverance guarantees it. Perseverance cannot survive without a purpose. Perseverance means succeeding because you are determined to, not destined to. Perseverance recognizes life is not a long race, but many short ones in succession. Perseverance draws sweetness out of adversity. Perseverance means stopping not because we're tired but because the task is done. Perseverance demands all that we have.

8. Courage tests your talent. Courage is a daily virtue. You cannot do anything worthwhile without courage. Our courage will be tested as we seek a truth that we know may be painful. Our courage will be tested when change is needed, when our convictions are challenged and when learning and growing will display our weakness. Our courage will be tested when we face obstacles during our progress. You need to want to reach your potential and be willing to trade what seems good at the moment for what's best for your potential.

9. Teachability expands your talent. It is the desire to learn, unlearn, relearn and apply. You will expand if you keep expecting and striving to learn. Learning is a lifelong pursuit.

10. Character protects your talent. Character comprises of self discipline, core values, sense of identity and integrity. Character builds what's inside you. Character makes a difference in you. Character communicates consistency, longevity and influence. Character affects and influences your choice.

11. Relationships influence your talent. Surround yourself with people who add value to you and encourage you and your talent will go in a positive direction. The relationship in your life can make or break you. You should embrace relationship that expands your energy and avoid relationship that saps your energy. Your relationship will define you, so choose wisely.

12. Responsibility strengthens your talent. Responsibility is the foundation of success. It is a sacrifice that brings tremendous rewards. Responsibility when handled correctly will lead to more responsibilities. It will maximize your ability and expands your opportunity. Take responsibility of being a contributor instead of a liability. Responsible people enjoy an increasingly better reputation.

13. Teamwork multiplies your talent. You cannot do it alone to fulfill your dreams. Partner yourself with others who have strengths in those areas that you do not posses. Teamwork when done correctly has the compounding effect of achieving results. It will also expand your potential. If you think and achieve as a team, the individual accolades will take care of themselves. A talented person who is part of a right team becomes more than he ever could on his own.

About the Author
Ann Charters received her B.A. at Berkeley and her Ph.D. at Columbia. She first met Kerouac at a poetry reading in Berkeley in 1956, and compiled a comprehensive bibliography of his work in 1967. A professor of English at the University of Connecticut, she is also the editor of Selected Letters of Jack Kerouac and the Portable Kerouac Reader, and the author of Beats and Company: Portrait of a Literary Generation.

I couldn't put this down

While in college, I had to do a paper on "On The Road" and after reading it, I became absolutely fascinated with Jack Kerouac. I got this book out of the library one day. I think it is excellent. It documents Kerouac's whole life from birth to death and gives the reader a wonderul insight into the "real" Jack Kerouac. I literally could not put this down.

A Biography Worth the Read!

Ms. Charters did a commenable job putting together
this book. I would rate it right up there with
Nicosia's bio. The author certainly provided a lot
of background info and did a compelling job of
helping me get a better understanding of the social
climate which Kerouac & friends had to contend with
and conquer. My only complaint is that her writing style
sometimes lapses into a style a little too closely allied
with that of her subject, but given the subject matter, that is
understandable. I would recommend this book for those of
you who have found Kerouac's writings to be enjoyable.

Time For A New Biography

Although there's quite a few bio's of Jack out there, it's unfortunate that the majority of them are sub standard. I read this decades ago and remembered it fondly, but a careful re-reading has brought out all the defects. Charters evidently couldn't quote from the sources, so what remains is a botch of a biography. There's really nothing here substantial, and Charters is reduced to re-wording the books... She also has the ingratiating habit of putting herself in quite a few scenes. Yet she's the only one of Kerouac's many biographers that actually met the man, and her telling of meeting him to do his bibliography is a good representation of the mans sad later years. Thus the need to repeat head-shaking incidents, ad nauseam, is avoided... Kerouac's wife Stella and his mother weren't happy with the first edition of this book, as it reported that Jack's sister Nin committed suicide (the woman died of a heart attack). Nicosia's is the far better bio, but it sags under its own bloated grandiosity. Brinkley was supposed to the Authorized Biography, but evidently that fell through. I feel his would've been the best. But we'll never know.

About the Author
Sudha Murty was born in 1950 in Shiggaon in north Karnataka. She did her MTech in computer science, and is now the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. A prolific writer in English and Kannada, she has written novels, technical books, travelogues, collections of short stories and non-fictional pieces, and four books for children. Her books have been translated into all the major Indian languages. Sudha Murty was the recipient of the R.K.Naryan Award for Literature and the Padma Shri in 2006, and the Attimabbe Award from the government of Karnataka for excellence in Kannada literature in 2011.

Wonderful Book for all ages!

I would certainly recommend this book for all the kids. Stories propel imagination and these are the kind of books, which help them.
Sudha murthy's writing skill is great. Not just the kids, even adults would love to read such books.
And getting it in amazon kindle is a great. The price is reduced and i get to carry it at all the places.

Good read

Excellent reading for children who would have missed the life of 1970s and 80s of India. Going to summer vacation to the native and listening stories from Grand Parents were the norm which is missed by the present generation of children.

In particular, he examines the ideological divide between those he calls the "spreaders," who welcome the wider market for organic food and want to work with both government and agribusiness, and the more purist "tillers," who see organic practices as part of a broader social transformation that will take place outside existing institutions.

Obach argues that the movement's changing relationship with governmental institutions is crucial to understanding the trajectory of the organic sector. The government-run National Organic Program fostered dramatic growth and deep corporate penetration of the organic market. While many activists were disillusioned by changes in the organic industry that came with corporate and government involvement, Obach sees a failure in the essential market- based strategy adopted by the movement early in its history. He argues for a refocus on policy efforts that can reshape the agricultural system as a whole.

Great Book on US Movement

This is one of the few books that provides a comprehensive assessment of the organic movement in the U.S. From a sociology perspective, it does an excellent job talking about the nature of the movement and succinctly summarizes some major events surrounding the developing of the National Organic Program. However, I was really wanting this book to have more depth than what was there when it came to talking about the policy side of the movement. Obach does summarize conflicting views of what the program ought to be, but the engagement with how those stories manifested seemed superficial. Maybe my expectations were off for what this book had to offer. It is a very informative read, but I was just wanting more to truly be able to give 5 stars.
