From Booklist
“ATTENTION, NEW RECRUITS . . . Your mission: Begin Basic Training to become a Future Mars Explorer.” That may sound like science fiction, but look who’s talking: planetary scientist Pascal Lee, chairman of the Mars Institute and director of the NASA Haughton-Mars Project. Referencing a plan to send humans to Mars around 2035, Pascal introduces future astronauts to the planet Mars, their training in Mars-like environments on Earth, their spacecraft, the voyage, the moons, the Mars landing, their equipment (spacesuit, habitat, ATV, and rover), and the possibility of terraforming the planet. The concise, informative text is tightly interwoven with excellent color photos, space images, and well-captioned diagrams of equipment. Every few pages, Pascal addresses readers directly in a boxed “Message from your training director” feature, challenging them to envision the practical steps that could someday lead them to Mars. Attractive and affordable, this large-format paperback offers facts, insights, and adventurous dreams for armchair space travelers. Grades 3-6. --Carolyn Phelan

Praise for Mission: Mars
"Pascal Lee is a true pioneer of Mars exploration. This book makes me want to put on a spacesuit and go to Mars!" -Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Astronaut and author of Mission To Mars
About the Author
Dr. Pascal Lee is chairman of the Mars Institute and a planetary scientist at the SETI Institute. He is also director of the NASA Haughton-Mars Project at NASA Ames Research Center. The project helps plan future human missions to Mars.
Pascal’s interest in space began at an early age. When he was six, he built his first spaceship” by putting a laundry basket on roller skates. Early test flights, often co-piloted with his younger brother, did not always end well. He refined his skills by studying physics and geology at the University of Paris in France. He continued on with a PhD in astronomy and space sciences at Cornell University in New York.
When not researching ways to advance space exploration, Pascal likes to play with his three dogs and paint space art. He is also a helicopter pilot and flight instructor.

Fun and educational!
By Brian
Although geared towards a youth audience, I really enjoyed reading Mission: Mars as an adult. I found the fun facts about Mars and all of the details involved in planning for the challenges and dangers for a mission to be very interesting. The pictures and photographs that illustrate this information were fantastic. Two of my favorite parts were life aboard the ship and the weirdest attractions of Mars. Having Dr. Lee as the "Training Director" was also a nice touch! I recommend for any young "explorers".

Great gift for all ages!

I gave this book to 9 kids that I know - 3 nephews, 1 niece, kids of friends - they all LOVED it. It is entertaining, informative, easy to read in short pieces for the kids. They love opening up to a different page and reading the different factoids and stories put together by the author, who obviously has a wealth of amazing personal experience with Mars exploration. It is a great way to get children and adults to learn about planetary science, as well as to stimulate creativity and imagination! Wonderful book! Congratulations to the author and I hope there will be a future series!

exciting and inspiring!

One of the many great things about this little book is the sense of "this is happening... we are going to Mars!"
Dr Lee's style of framing the challenges involved in the Mars project, is a perfect model of problem solving: what do we know, what do we need to know and what are the parameters of the situation.
Lots of open doors here for a child's imagination to roam around a big, exciting project.
I sure hope this gem makes it into classrooms.
